Guest Speaker: Reid Swanson
Reid Swanson is a Fish Biologist with the Great Lakes Fishery Commission working on the biological assessment component of the bi-directional selective fish passage (FishPass) project. His work is focused on understanding the space use and movement phenology of resident and migratory fish in the lower Boardman River using multiple types of bio-telemetry. Mr. Swanson received his B.S. in Fisheries and Wildlife Management and M.S. in Conservation Biology from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. Reid is broadly interested in the restoration of fisheries and ecosystems through management practices that support native populations and control undesirable or invasive species. Prior to joining the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, Reid worked with the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center. His primary focus in this organization was understanding the population dynamics of invasive common carp to increase the efficacy of management tool aimed at controlling them. In this position he also assisted in the development of behavioral control and early detection techniques for Asian carp. Reid is stationed in Traverse City, MI and is working with FishPass project partners to create a baseline dataset of fish movement prior to the installation of FishPass and construct monitoring infrastructure to facilitate future research upon completion of the FishPass project.
